Chapter Fourteen

Loriot studied Kirill closely, making him wonder what he was looking for. “I’d prefer not to discuss it out here. The guards are clearing the garden, but it’s best to go inside where we can speak without being interrupted. I’d like to speak with all of you about what happened anyway. Except you, Lord Alexander. As you weren’t in the garden?”

“No, I was on the other side of the palace, so I doubt I’m of any use to you as anything other than messenger today,” Alexander responded. Though it could’ve come out teasing, the response was devoid of the glimmers of mischief Kirill had heard in Alexander’s interactions with Faelen. “I sent for Lord Marcus, and Their Highnesses are aware and waiting for your report whenever you have it for them.”

“Thank you, Lord Alexander. May I impose upon you to ask Their Highnesses if I could report to them after I speak with Lord Faelen, Lord Griffen, and Master Kirill?”

“Of course.” Alexander nodded to them all and gave Faelen’s hand a squeeze before he left them.

“Would you like to speak with us now?” Faelen asked.

“If you’d be so kind.” Loriot continued after they all nodded, “If you would accompany me inside?”

“I’ll remain here and wait for Lord Marcus,” the duke said. “I’ll have Master Savarin report to the princes as well.”

Kirill wanted to stay behind and see what Savarin was doing, find out who this Marcus was and what his involvement would be…but he couldn’t refuse the captain of the royal guard at this point.

They set out together, Captain Loriot leading the way. Griffen was silent at Kirill’s side, but then, none of them were saying anything. Perhaps the others were as sunk in their thoughts as Kirill was. There were guards throughout the garden as they wound their way toward the palace, in a different direction from the wing where Kirill was staying. After a few moments walking, they came upon Alexander standing with a soberly dressed man who had dark hair just silvering at the temples. He looked vaguely familiar to Kirill. Had he seen him somewhere in the palace? The man was bent close to hear whatever Alexander was rapidly telling him in a quiet voice.

“Do you need me, Lord Marcus? Or can we talk after you’ve taken a look?” Captain Loriot asked as they drew even with the two men.

Marcus glanced between Loriot and the three of them following him. “After is fine if you have other priorities at the moment. Alexander has informed me of what happened.”

“Thank you. I’ll speak with you shortly.”

They continued on; no one had bothered introducing Kirill to Marcus. Of course, Faelen had almost forgotten to introduce him to Alexander. The situation was distracting them all from the formalities, and Kirill wasn’t going to be upset about it.

Loriot herded them out of the gardens and into the palace, gesturing for two guards to accompany them once they reached the terrace. One of the guards reported quickly about how the search of the gardens was proceeding.
